It's the Small Things

Yesterday, our pastor talked about the book, The Five Love LanguagesI've never read this book, but I think I will pick it up next time I have a chance.
He explained the 5 different ways people communicate or receive love: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch.  I like to think I speak all five languages fluently!  I guess we'll see after I read the book :).

I think that I respond the best to Acts of Service.  Take yesterday for example.  I woke up Sunday morning to put a roast in the crockpot for lunch.  When I went to grab the de-frosted roast from the fridge, I realized that it made a mess ALL OVER my shelves.  YIKES!  I yelled up to Bradley {who was still in bed} to come and help me clean up the yucky mess.  Without any reservation, he hurried down to give me a hand.

Then, after church we came home and I went on my Sunday jog around the neighborhood.  When I returned, he had cleaned up the small mess from the night before where we had friends over for football, added more veggies to the crockpot, unloaded the dishwasher, and had a glass of water waiting on me.

While eating lunch, I noticed a small cobweb starting to form in the corner of my dining room.  Don't these spiders know that it isn't quite Halloween yet, and those decorations are not welcome in my home?!  He offered to get it down for me after we finished lunch, and even told me to leave the dishes on the counter and he would clean up after the NFL game he wanted to watch.

Then, as if that wasn't enough, he surprised me and took me out for ice cream late in the afternoon!

Someone can tell me a million times over that they love me, but like my mama has always said, actions speak louder than words.  I know without a doubt that my husband loves me.  And I know that even though we share the household chores, it's nice to be waited on sometimes {yes ladies, he does he own laundry! he's a keeper}.  These small acts of kindness can go a long way in showing someone you love them.  My motto is, it's always nice to give a lot and take a little :).

Have you ever read The Five Love Languages?

Which one do you respond most to?

i love love that book. i did a post on that book a few weeks ago. and i agree with you exactly actions speak louder than words. i realized i had been preaching about speaking my husband's love language and then realized i wasn't doing exactly the way he needs it, i was doing it the way the came most natural to me. thanks for sharing such a great book!
